SEASON 2, ROUND ONE Preview -- September 7th @ Mosport

Post by John Bacho on Mon 2 Sep - 14:10

    SIM RACE ONLINE GT3
    SEASON 2 - ROUND 1
    September 7th @ Mosport

    INTRO

Hey whattaya know, it’s almost time to begin Season 2 of the Sim Race Online GT3 series! The host for our Saturday season opener is at a track that has been largely untouched over the years, Mosport Park, now officially known as Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. I’m not a fan of corporate sponsors renaming sporting venues, but I’m content with it if they can preserve the track while making it safer to drive and easier to spectate at the same time.

I was shocked when Jimmy Broadbent told me that only up until a few days ago he had never driven a lap here! My first exposure to driving Mosport was in Grand Prix Legends; as well as viewing broadcasts for IMSA GTP, ALMS and SCCA events. I’ve yet to meet someone that dislikes this circuit with its’ flowing corners and elevation changes that demand concentration in the high-speed sections.

More than any other track on this season’s six race calendar, I expect the time differential between drivers will be closest at Mosport. Finding the line and keeping it off the grass (even a little bit, the lack of runoff usually spells doom) is key to a good lap time -- late braking and early throttle skills simply aren’t as useful as keeping the car in the racing groove at each apex to transition for the next corner.

So far the sign-ups have been slowly trickling in, with many people on Teamspeak still on the fence about which make to drive. I suspect Schuman will choose nine more cars before Qualifying starts @ 12:00PM Pacific / 15:00PM Eastern. Make sure to practise enough to discover the car that works for you. For example, I drove 50 laps in the Audi R8 LMS and thought I had reached what was possible within my ability. I jumped into the BMW Z4 and immediately lapped one second faster on my first flying lap. I can’t tell you how many times people have told me this, but interchanged the previously mentioned cars with two random machines in the list. I assure you they’re all finely balanced, even more so than the Season 1 version of this mod. It’s the differences between the front-engine, mid-engine, rear-engine and general physics characteristics that will determine your ultimate lap time depending on your unique driving style.

The server will change over to GT3 & Mosport after the conclusion of our Volvo S40 vs Volve 850 Fun Run later today. I’ll reply to this thread when it’s officially up.

    HISTORY

The circuit was the second purpose-built road race course in Canada after Westwood Motorsport Park in Coquitlam, British Columbia, succeeding Edenvale (Stayner, Ontario), Port Albert, Ontario's Green Acres (ex-British Commonwealth Air Training Plan), and Nanticoke, Ontario's Harewood Acres (ex-British Commonwealth Air Training Plan Number One Bombing and Gunnery School), all airport circuits, as Ontario racing venues. It was designed and built in the late 1950s, and held its first major race on June 25, 1961, the Player's 200, a sports car race bringing drivers from the world over to rural Ontario. Stirling Moss won the two-heat event in a Lotus 19. Second was Joakim Bonnier with Olivier Gendebien third. The proposed hairpin was expanded into two discrete corners, to be of greater challenge to the drivers and more interesting for the spectators, at his suggestion, and is named Moss Corner in his honour. This is a source of lingering confusion as many people call the track Mossport.

Mosport has had a succession of owners since the original public company created to build the track. Two of those prior owners, Norm Namerow (who owned the track through his publishing company, CanTrack, until his death) and Harvey Hudes, have both been inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame for their contribution to the sport in Canada. In 1998, the Panoz Motor Sports Group purchased the facility, and in 1999, the newly formed American Le Mans Series visited Mosport for the first time. For 2001, the entire circuit was repaved to meet FIA specifications, and is now 42 feet (12.8 m) wide. Drivers were consulted to ensure the character of the "old" track was kept; almost all the "racing lines" have been maintained.

Mosport achieved acclaim though a series of international sports car races under the title "Canadian Grand Prix" normally reserved for Formula 1 races. Many events were wildly popular, breaking Canadian sports attendance records with each successive race. The success of these races led Mosport to be seen as a key component in the founding of the Can Am Series. The CanAm first visited the track in its inaugural season in 1966, and Mosport hosted at least one event in every year of the series' history, except 1968. In 1967, Canada's centennial year, Mosport hosted Formula One, USAC, and a 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix. F1's Grand Prix of Canada remained at the track until 1977. Mosport has hosted a wide variety of series throughout its history. The circuit has held Formula One, USAC, World Sportscar Championship, Can-Am, Formula 5000, and many other sports car, open-wheel, and motorcycle series.

Mosport has had several fatalities, both track crew, drivers, and riders, the most recognized being German Manfred Winkelhock who was killed in 1985 when his Porsche 962C crashed into a concrete wall. The most recent fatality at the track was in 2008 during the 29th annual Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada Racing Festival. Driver Dino Crescentini of Rochester Hills, MI - a ten-year veteran of vintage racing - lost control of his 1977 Wolf Dallara Can-Am car, which previously had been driven by the late Gilles Villeneuve.

    NOTES

    • We're using a Standing start with a Formation Lap. Remember to slowly form into a single-file line. No weaving, burnouts, or suddenly slamming on the brakes. The pole-sitter will control the field at a maximum of 100mph / 160kmh back to the starting grid. If you can't see the lights or hear the horn, change your rFactor LCD page till it reads TIME LEFT and go when the clock reads 0:00.

    • Standard cutting rules apply. It's a tough track to drop wheels on the grass, so I'm not going to give any specific pictures on cut exceptions. See the Series Format & Rules page for more information.

    • EDIT 9/1: The server now allows Low Anti-Lock Brakes by pressing F9 on your keyboard. The reasoning behind this is that the brake pressure in v1.2 is locked at 100% -- an issue that has been bothering a few drivers with completely different wheels. If it makes any purists feel better, the real Blancpain GT3 cars have it (and traction control, which isn't necessary in this mod) as well.

    • EDIT 9/5: Target times are at 1:17.x for Qualifying; 1:18.x for the Race.

    TIMES

17:00 GMT -- Official Practise begins
    19:00 GMT -- Qualifying (12:00 Pacific / 15:00 Eastern)
    19:15 GMT -- Warmup
    19:25 GMT -- Feature Race -- 34 laps
    20:10 GMT -- Warmup*
    20:20 GMT -- Sprint Race* -- 16 laps

    * Times are approximate & subject to change depending on technical issues, drivers finishing and small differences in race length.

The server is updated with the correct GT3 files. Also, read the note I added about Anti-Lock Brakes being used for this series in the root post.

I was pretty violently opposed to allowing anti-lock brakes until I read the above.  Good explanation of a valid concern
Besides you don't really need brakes at Mosport!Laughing

Target times thus far are in the 1:17's for Qualifying laps, with many drivers in the 1:18's for their Race laps. I have a second to chop off to get there!

I'm going to miss this race sadly. I have had no time for preparations and I don't want to be a danger on the track. Good luck all.
